2020 was a year full of… interesting things. But one thing I think about most was my boy being born. He is a feisty fellow. Full of passion. And with the new addition comes lessons learned. Life with two kids has taught me a few things I would like to record. In no particular order, below is a list of things that have come to mind within the last 12 months.
- Boys, or at least this one, are physical. Everything this guy does is aggressive. And I love it! I believe this little man was built, like all humans, with unique abilities and I cannot wait to help create an environment for young James to test the waters with his natural talents. I am thinking more and more on how I can challenge him while also be encouraging.
- I used to think I could change the world. You know the cliche, “make it a better place”. But having two kids, and two working adults, I think that I am better off focusing on my life, and being the best provider I can be for my family first. From there, good will, hopefully, flow out as a consequence.
- Patience, respect, prayer, and communication are all underrated tools that have been sharpened with the addition of another child. It just amazes me how I can foster a better relationship with another individual by giving them the benefit to the doubt first. Another trick on this topic, don’t keep score with your spouse. Just focus on busting your butt day-in-and-day-out. Life will never balance out eventually. But your attitude can create peace. Who doesn’t want that?
- The book Parenting by David Tripp is a must read. Having first read this book with my daughter, I recognized value in the content. But now, with two kids, I cannot recommend it enough. There are just so many times where my emotions want to take over when I am upset. But this book shares genuine wisdom which help me rely on principles that address the root of most problems. It’s just incredible.
In summary, you become a new person when you have kids. I am not where I want to be, but I am definitely wiser than I used to be. Happy birthday young James!
